Executive Summary
Mere weeks after the Bletchley Summit, at which the UK announced it has no immediate plan to introduce legislation that regulates the development, deployment, and use of AI; The Artificial Intelligence [Regulation] Bill has begun the legislative approval which has started in the House of Lords. If passed successfully, this new bill will have implications for businesses who develop, deploy or use AI.

What the Bill Contains?
It follows the UK white paper’s sectoral approach. But calls for an AI Authority to:
§ Self-implement key AI Principles.
§ Oversee the implementation of Key AI Principles.
§ Oversee implementation of controls by sector specific regulators.
§ Ensure coherence of sector specific regulators approach.
§ Monitor economic risks.
§ Provide education.
§ Ensure UK approach alignment with international frameworks to ensure business continuity.
The Bill also calls for the:
§ Creation of regulatory sandboxes, overseen by the AI Authority.
§ Appointment of AI officers by all companies who deploy, develop or use AI to ensure company compliance with UK AI standards.
§ Implementation of a programme for meaningful, long-term public engagement about the opportunities and risks presented by AI.
§ Transparency, IP obligations and labelling
Response
§ Companies that develop, deploy, and use AI should begin to consider measures to ensure their policies, procedures, processes, and development standard meet the higher standard set by emerging UK regulation and legislation, the EU AI Act and/or the NIST AI Framework.
